Eco-Friendly Ideas for Your Caravan or RV Trip

One of the best things about travelling by caravan or RV is the ability to see our natural world up close and personal. There’s something magical about encountering unique wildlife, discovering a hidden hiking trail that isn’t in any guide book or waking to the sound of birdsong. To ensure that the beautiful places we visit and the creatures that call them home are around for generations to come, it is important that we do our bit to protect and conserve the environment. Below are some tips to help you make your caravan or RV trip that little bit more eco-friendly.

1. Say goodbye to single use plastic

While on the road, single use plastic can be a convenient option but it isn’t a great choice for the environment. Planning ahead and packing things like reusable bags, metal or bamboo straws, cutlery, reusable containers and water bottles can help minimise the waste you create. Check out our Aluminium Alloy Camping Pot Kit, which includes a burner, pot, bowl, cup and cutlery that you can use again and again.

2. Shop local

Instead of heading to the familiar supermarkets or big brand stores, see if you can source what you need from local producers and sellers. Not only will you be supporting small businesses and local communities but you’ll be reducing food miles and your carbon footprint.

3. Shower sustainably

Decreasing your water use is a no brainer when it comes to eco-friendly travel. Conserve up to 40% more water when you shower by installing a Showermi$er. Read more about it on our blog.

4. Try eco-conscious cleaning

When choosing cleaning products for both the dishes and yourself, try to find natural, biodegradable products. Additionally, rather than just pouring out waste water onto the ground, take it home and dispose of it correctly. This will protect the local soil and environment from any damaging chemicals.

5. Travel light

We don’t have to tell you that the heavier your vehicle is, the more fuel you will need to use. Packing light can reduce your fuel costs and your impact on the environment. Before you leave for your trip, consider what you are definitely going to need and maybe leave behind those extra ‘just in case’ items. Topargee sells a whole range of light weight essential products that might help you reduce the load.

6. Monitor your water use

As the old adage goes, knowledge is power. It’s much easier to conserve water when you know exactly how much you are using. Topargee water gauges allow you to track your water use by the litre so you can actively work to minimise and reduce it.

7. Leave No Trace

When you travel, adopt the motto take only photos, leave only footprints. Make sure that whatever waste you do generate while on your trip is disposed of responsibly. If you have items that can be recycled, don’t just dump them in the most convenient bin. Do your best to seek out recycling facilities whenever possible.
