Packing Tips for a Travel Adventure

Packing can be the worst thing about travelling. You can spend ages deliberating over what to take but more importantly, what NOT to take. We’ve put together some tips to help make the fine art of packing easier.

1. Create a packing list

A few days before you’re scheduled to set off on your travel adventure, start a list of all the things you think you’ll need to take. Add to this list as ideas pop into your head over the next day or so. When the time comes to get organised, look over the list, edit it, edit it again and then start packing! It’ll save you the panic of throwing everything in at the last minute and the disappointment when you later realise you’ve forgotten something important.

2. Less is more

Obviously you’ll need the essentials but do you really need 10 pairs of undies? And what about that spare shirt? Think carefully about what you take with you because you’re going to be the one that has to carry it from place to place. Plan to wear the same outfit again and again to cut down on clothing and buy mini toiletries to keep your luggage lightweight.

3. Compartmentalise

Compartmentalise items in your bag or suitcase to stay organised and reduce the stress of trying to find things. If your bag or suitcase doesn’t have compartments built in, we suggest you source dry bags in different colours and sizes. Pack your clothing and equipment in these bags methodically, in a way that makes sense to you. Don’t forget to keep one dry bag spare for dirty laundry because adventuring can get dirty! If you’re hiking or out in the wilderness, keep an additional bag to store any rubbish so you can dispose of it when you find a bin.

4. Hydration is key

Whether you’re off on a day hike or travelling to the bush for a year, it’s important to always stay hydrated. Think about how much access you’ll have to water on your adventure and plan to take everything you need to ensure you stay happy and healthy.

5. Check the weather

This one seems like a no-brainer when you’re trying to pack light, but you’d be surprised how many people pack for the weather they want, rather than the weather that’s predicted. It makes sense. You have high hopes for your travel adventure and bad weather can really put a dampener on your plans. However, if you’ve packed weather appropriate clothing and equipment, you’ll be better prepared and more likely to enjoy the experience regardless of what Mother Nature throws at you.

6. Don’t forget the fun things

What’s a travel adventure without a little fun? This will look different depending on who you are and how you’re travelling. Topargee’s co-owner and mother of 2, Kylie, doesn’t go anywhere without a deck of UNO cards, a good book and some great tunes. Whereas Sales Manager, James, is a photographer and always packs the essential gear he needs to capture the great outdoors when he heads out on a solo hike.
